Coffee is a product of the land. The farmers who grow it are the cornerstone of the supply chain, which starts with the coffee bean and culminates in the espresso cup. In our Group, therefore, we are driven by a deep sense of responsibility to the communities in which we operate. For this reason, we have designed a broad programme of activities to engage these communities, aiming to create shared value and generate positive social, economic and environmental impact.
Discover our projectsCoffee&Climate is a technical panel in which Giuseppe Lavazza is co-chair. It consists of sector companies and government development agencies and aims to address the challenges that climate change poses to the sector. In this venture, it is supported by International Coffee Partners (ICP), an association uniting the major coffee producing and trading companies, of which Lavazza is a founding member. The goal of Coffee&Climate is to find concrete solutions to help farmers preserve their crops and their quality, and to develop sustainability programmes to improve social, economic and environmental conditions for coffee-growing communities. To date, more than 84,000 families have been involved in this programme, with a target of more than 130,000 by 2023.
Our efforts to support communities also include the training programme, A Cup of Learning, dedicated to helping young people seeking jobs in the coffee world, especially those from disadvantaged social groups. A Cup of Learning offers two different courses: one is dedicated to green coffee, focusing on the sensory analysis of coffee, processing techniques and tasting and evaluating products based on their origin; the other is dedicated to espresso coffee and concentrates on the theory and practice of ‘Being a Barista’. Our Group's professionals are hands-on involved and make their experience available to others through training delivered either directly in coffee-producing countries or at the training centre in Turin. Since 2017, 120 people have benefited from this initiative, gaining the necessary skills to start work in 10 countries: Italy, Dominican Republic, India, Albania, Haiti, Brazil, Cuba, Peru and the UK.
Relationships with suppliers are based on our fundamental values: authenticity, passion for excellence, responsibility and inventiveness. These represent the essence of Lavazza's Code of Ethics which, together with the Supplier Code of Conduct and the Employee Code of Conduct, embody the principles to which all our brands aspire. In addition, Lavazza adheres to the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact, which promotes respect for human rights and workers and, in particular, rejects all forms of forced labour and child labour, while promoting environmental protection.
In 2017, it was decided to strengthen our long-standing partnership with Save the Children - dating back to the early 2000s - by adhering to the Children's Rights and Business Principles, the guidelines that promote respect and support for children's rights through day-to-day business activities. In 2021, this partnership celebrated its first 20 years, during which several projects have successfully contributed to the well-being of children.
In order to spread the culture of sustainability, we decided to use a variety of visual languages to raise awareness and engage the communities we work directly with. One of the most important of these projects is TOward 2030. What are you doing? stands out. This collaboration with the city of Turin involved the production of street artworks inspired by the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These murals, created by international artists in strategic locations around the city, were designed to provoke debate and engage citizens - especially young people - through the communicative power of art, starting with the title of the project itself.
