The history of Lavazza | Luigi Lavazza was an Italian retailer born in Murisengo, a small town in the province of Turin (Piedmont).
In 1895, Luigi Lavazza bought a small grocery shop, Paissa Olivero, in Turin’s old town. He paid the sum of 26,000 Italian Lira, about 16 euros. At this time, these shops were used for both retail and production purposes. Coffee was just one of the many products Luigi Lavazza sold in his shop. Back then, coffee beans were bought raw and then roasted to customers' liking.
This soon sparked the interest of Luigi Lavazza, who was one of the first to mix different types of coffee to create a blend. With this, Luigi Lavazza quickly made a name for himself in Turin and the surrounding area. With his knowledge and skills in making blends, and using different roasts, Luigi Lavazza was soon able to stand out from the other local coffee roasters.
